Amateur thespians scoop TV quiz jackpot

| VICTORIOUS: The Dinas Powys players won £27,000 on BBC Two quiz show, Eggheads. |
A TEAM of amateur thespians from Dinas Powys won £27,000 on a BBC game show recently - after beating the most formidable quiz team in the country.
The Dinas Powys Players scooped the prize after defeating the Eggheads, five British quiz champions that include Judith Keppel, the first British winner of £1 million pounds on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
But remarkably the Dinas team - who called themselves The Weakly Players - hadn't even entered a pub quiz before appearing on the popular BBC Two show, which is presented by Dermot Murnaghan.
One of the team, Roy Gibbons, said he was still in shock at the result.
"It's unbelievable really," he said
"We just went up there after one of our team, Pat Tadecicco, entered us for a laugh.
"She watches the show and we think she did it because she has a crush on Dermot Murnaghan.
"But thank goodness she did!
"I went for sport for my question but I don't have a clue about it," added Mr Gibbons
"Dermot asked me questions about downhill skiing, cricket and basketball and I pretty much guessed the lot!"
Eggheads has four main rounds in which the challengers are given a category, and choose one of their players to play against an Egghead of their choice.
Contestants are asked three multiple choice questions each and the winning players from each team go through to a final showdown.
Should the challengers win, they receive £1,000 plus a further £1,000 for each day the Eggheads had previously gone undefeated - in this case a massive £27,000.
Usually contestants must eliminate at least two of the Eggheads to have any chance of winning the final round, but The Weakly Players did it the hard way.
"Fortunately I got rid of Daphne in the sport round," added Roy
"But it was still just me and Pat against the rest of the Eggheads.
"We were just lucky I suppose, as the questions fell right for us.
"But I have to say the Eggheads were very gracious in defeat.
"We had fixed grins on our faces as we walked out of BBC television centre," he added.
"Someone even had to tell us to be quiet because the next team to face the Eggheads were serious quizzers and thought they'd be playing for £28,000.
"But the team from Wales showed them how it's done!"
The Weakly Players - including Pat Tadecicco, Roy and Sue Gibbons, Norma Critcher, Ralph Petrie and Derek Hooper (sub) - say they haven't decided how to spend the money yet, but will be making a donation to Dinas Powys Voluntary Concern.
