THE FAMILY of a Penarth man who was killed by the tsunami that devastated much of Asia have continued their fundraising campaign to help two Taiwanese families.

Kevin McCarthy, 33, was in Khao Lak, Thailand, with girlfriend Debra Evans, 31, when the tidal waves hit on Boxing Day 2004.

It was Christmas Day when their families last heard from the couple, who were enjoying a two-week holiday in South East Asia.

But following the discovery of Kevin's body, his family decided to start a fundraising campaign to help people affected by the disaster.

Steve Andrews, Mr McCarthy's brother-in-law, organises an annual fundraising event at the Ex-Servicemen's Club in Penarth.

More than £700 was raised at the recent Skittle Roll and Raffle night - and the money has already been sent out to two deserving families.

Mr Andrews said: "When we went over to search for Kevin's body we met Bas and Wave, two young boys who had lost their mother in the tsunami.

"They were actually told their mother had died while we were looking for Kevin.

"While we were there, Kevin and Boom Quiltey, from the holiday company Kevin and Debra had gone away with, were so supportive and have continued to help keep a link with Wave and Bas.

"We've also kept in contact with Mr Twang, who lost his family and his leg in the tsunami.

"Over the last three years we've managed to raise £3,600 which, among other things, has helped buy a motorbike for both Mr Twang and for grandma', who looks after Wave and Bas.

"It's meant they can get on with their lives and we felt it was a fitting tribute to Kevin and Debra."

But the latest fundraiser couldn't have happened without the help of local businesses, a fact Mr Andrews is quick to acknowledge.

He added: "The Ex's have been great in hosting the event.

"We also had businesses donate prizes, which showed great support and I have to thank them for that.

"Hopefully we'll get some more involved in next years event."

Raffle prizes were donated by the Glendale Hotel, Karen Miller of Rainbowstar Relaxation, and Alan and Theresa Brain.
