FRIGHTENING: Sylvia Miller was attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

A PENARTH mum says she feared for her life when an out-of-control dog savaged her just yards from her home.

Sylvia Miller, of Fieldview Close, had more than 40 stitches in her forehead - and says doctors were shocked when they saw the facial injuries caused by the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Trouble started when Mrs Miller, daughter Hannah and pet dog Snowy walked to a nearby relative's home on Monday, March 10.

Mrs Miller, a supervisor of the breakfast club at Ysgol Pen-y-Garth in Penarth, says the dog charged out from a hole in a fence and started to attack Snowy.

Initially Mrs Miller froze, but when the animal began to rip at her daughter's coat, she quickly stepped in.

"I went to intervene but the dog just turned on me and jumped up to bite me in the face," she said "It was horrible and so frightening - once it got hold it wouldn't let go.

"Fortunately a neighbour got the dog off by pulling me into her house - I dread to think what could have happened otherwise.

"Afterwards I was covered in blood and in a daze.

"My face was a mess and the pain was terrible."

As police continue their investigations, Mrs Miller says she is afraid to leave her home and is still suffering excruciating pain two weeks after the incident.

"It feels like I've been hit in the head with a brick," she added.

"I get terrible headaches and I also injured my back when the dog pulled me around.

"You just wonder what would have happened if it had been a child."

The dog has now been destroyed.

Penarth Acting Sergeant Ian Willis said: "This was a nasty incident which no doubt left the victim extremely traumatised.

"The safety of the general public is of paramount importance to us, and a summons is to be issued under the Dangerous Dogs Act, to bring the matter before the courts."
