Hear our voice

I RECENTLY watched one of the TV programmes where the presenters take people around the country looking for a house.

The programme I saw came to Penarth. The presenters were showing houses in the top end of town.

One of the comments made was that "Penarth was a Victorian town with character properties".

Bearing in mind the work of developers in the area, how much longer will such a comment be relevant?

The Victorian character of our town is being eroded away. It might not appear to be such a big problem at the moment but at what stage do we say stop?

How long before we realise that we, the residents, are losing out.

As the electorate are our opinions being met? Do our planners actually represent us? Who supervises the arbitrary decisions of the Assembly Planning Inspectors, who overturn the decision of our local councils?

Every time a developer's planning application is re-submitted it costs us, the rate payers.

We have the honour of paying for the developers' need to make money by knocking down our old buildings to re-develop a site. With what?

Multi-storey flats and over-development gardens!

Take a walk around our town and see what 'planners/developers' have given us.

Walking through Alexandra Park towards the beach, the lovely vista across the top of the old baths towards the pier and the channel has been taken over by a gigantic square box.

A view shared by many, residents and visitors, has now disappeared. It is there for the benefit of those who will eventually abide in the box. This is just one 'improvement'.

Why do developers get permission to erect ultra modern architecture into small communities? These new structures are totally out of character with the existing buildings.

I live in a small terrace of ten yellow brick houses one side of the street and four limestone the other, overlooking Cardiff. We fought off a developer in the distant past.

Another last year, with the support of those who signed our petition, and are now in the process of taking up the cudgels again.

Why would anyone want to extend an existing yellow brick Victorian house, attach a three-storey flat roofed, cream coloured, rendered modern house with aluminium windows into the 14ft side garden?

Not just to come and live within a small community. Would making a profit at the expense of the long term residents have anything to do with it?

This development would seriously encroach onto the adjoining properties, taking away privacy with overlooking windows.

Totally out of keeping with the existing properties.

As such a small street, we have to get as much support as we can from the community of Penarth. If we as a town got together, our voice could be better heard.
