Happy ending after charity theft

CHARITABLE regulars from a Penarth pub came to the rescue of a good cause this week, after cash was swiped from a charity box.

As reported in the Penarth Times last month, thieves stole a SHUA (Safe House for Unwanted Animals) charity box containing £20 in loose change from the bar at The Windsor Arms.

After the theft, the pub's owners started a raffle to recover some of the money - and were overwhelmed at the response.

Barman Drew Williams said: "We ended up with about £130.

"Most people were just handing money in over the bar, they weren't even interested in the raffle prize.

"We do a lot of fundraising but our regulars have really come together on this one and I'd like to thank them all."

Sully-based animal rescue charity SHUA specialises in emergency rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of kittens and cats in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

The voluntary organisation relies heavily on donations so trustee, Kay Kisby, was delighted at the fundraising effort.

"It absolutely brilliant," she said.

"Twenty pounds might not seem much to big charities, but it's a lot to us.

"It was great to see people pull together to help us out - and it's incredible that they raised more than five times what was stolen.

"I can't thank them enough."
